Gage has completed a wide variety of project types at educational institutions – ranging from master planning / studies, restoration, additions, renovations, and new construction – at K-12 school districts, higher education, and vocational schools:
Dunlap Middle School Dunlap, IL
Dunlap Community SD #323 – Dunlap Middle School (IL)
Type: New Construction
Size of Site: 72 acres
Completion Date: August 2008
This is the second middle school of the district, and is a 79,000 square foot facility with the capacity for 450 students. The expanded core was designed to accommodate a future build-out for a capacity of 900 students. The classrooms are designed around a resource area to support the “house” concept. The central street connects the houses to the labs and other support functions of the school.
Electrical design for the new building included the following features:
- main service & distribution
- fire alarm
- intercom/paging system
- TV distribution
- clock system
- auditorium sound and lighting design

Illinois College of Optometry Chicago, IL
The renovation of 24,000 square feet of existing ophthalmology labs and classrooms created a new expanded learning environment for the college. These spaces included two new large ophthalmology labs/classrooms, five small classrooms containing labs, a break area and office spaces which incorporated a conference area for meetings.
NIU / Solar Water Heating DeKalb, IL
This project consisted of the installation of 180 solar collector panels on the roof of the Anderson Building and 96 solar panels on the Gable Building at Northern Illinois University. These panels were installed as a means of heating the swimming pool water.
With sufficient day lighting, the solar collectors are able to heat the swimming pool water without energy from the steam plant.

Ward Residence Hall, North Central College | Naperville, IL
New Addition (to former Fort Hill Dormitory)
Gage design services: Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Equip.
Reference: Dr. Rada Doytcheva, LEED AP | Design Principal – Rada Architects
Background | Project Description
This project included a new 32,000 square foot addition to the existing Fort Hill Dormitory on the Naperville campus. A 2-story passage link between the buildings was also included. The 4-story addition consisted of 72 bedrooms in a suite configuration, housing 2 to 5 bedrooms per suite. Each room offered air conditioning and a variety of modern conveniences. Each floor contained a lounge area – while large multi-purpose gathering areas, kitchens and laundry facilities were designed to serve the whole building.
Challenges & Solutions | Design Engineering
A primary challenge of this project was to complete the design of the new addition as a complement to the existing residence hall, with consideration of the budget limitations. Engineering included complete MEP design, a new generator, and a new fire pump for the facility.
Roscoe Middle School Roscoe, Illinois
This new 80,000 square foot middle school was built around the teaming/house philosophy. The school is comprised of four academic spaces or “houses” organized in clusters of 125 students. Each “house” includes four general classrooms, one flexible classroom, specific conference rooms, an open resource area and a staff planning room.
All of the spaces within this middle school were designed specifically to enable the District to accommodate future technology improvements. The school is flexible and/or expandable as it is designed for maximum community use.
Valley View SD #365U Facilities Romeoville / Bolingbrook, IL
These projects represent continued work at facilities in the Valley View School District #365U, involving the replacement of air-cooled chillers at two schools:
- Romeoville High School
- Oak View Elementary School
Previous projects by Gage Engineers within the Valley View School District include HVAC renovations at the Brooks Middle School. Gage’s work with this district has been in partnership with Kenneth J Kogut & Associates.
The main challenge of these projects was to efficiently implement the installation of new systems and equipment replacement at an older facility, within the seasonal time constraints. Gage successfully manages these challenges at client facilities on a regular basis, as specialists in the design and planning of equipment upgrades.
Wheaton College / Adams Hall Wheaton, IL
This project entailed three areas of construction; the complete interior demolition and renovation of the existing 15,640 square foot building consisting of three levels, a new 9,200 square foot addition and the construction of a new 5,250 square foot third floor addition and 2,400 square foot mezzanine addition above the existing second story. These new spaces provided offices, conference and seminar rooms, galleries, ceramic, sculpture, painting, drawing, community arts and photography studios/teaching spaces and a new computer lab. Upgrades within the building included audio visual systems, data distribution, air conditioning, fire sprinkler system, elevator and other ADA and life safety compliance upgrades.
Wheaton College / Edman Chapel Wheaton, IL
The project included a new 9,000 square-foot two-story addition which added acoustically isolated instrument practice rooms, one large full orchestra practice room, office space, public washrooms and a new loading dock. Areas of the existing building were remodeled, including the retrofitting of the entire existing building with a new fire sprinkler system adding a new elevator and other ADA upgrades.
Wheaton College / Todd Beamer Student Center - Wheaton, IL
The Beamer Center project involved the remodel of the existing Alumni Gym and Anderson Commons. The gym project involved 40,000 square feet of remodeling of the three-story facility. The lower level of the Alumni Gym became the meeting and office areas for student activities and alumni services. Acoustical treatments were necessary to keep the office spaces quiet with an active basketball court located on the floor directly above. The main floor of the gym was remodeled to allow for large banquets with proper lighting and sound reinforcement. The area incorporates a performance stage which can be viewed from both seating areas.
The lower level of Anderson Commons was completely renovated as a 30,000 square foot conversion. This area consists of a student center containing a campus post office, convenience store, student grille, kitchen areas, lounge and recreation room with all of the amenities. New air handling systems were installed to provide adequate cooling and ventilation. Chilled water for cooling and steam for heating were extensions of the existing campus distribution system. Lighting and lighting controls were selected to enhance the many different functions housed in this versatile student facility.
